Patapsco 852R
Fru-Con Construction is building the world’s largest Fixed Film Denitrification System at the City of Baltimore’s Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant located on the Patapsco River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. The City awarded the project to Fru-Con in December 2009 and is one of several expansions and upgrades at the Plant that will occur over the next 3 years; and once completed, it will be the largest installed fixed-film denitrification system in the world.
This $116M facility will be completed in 2012 and will expand the plant’s capacity from 73 to 81 Million gallons per day. Fru-Con will install and commission the proprietary TETRA supplied Denite system which is designed to reduce nitrate- nitrogen to 0.5 mg/l and total suspended solids to 6 mg/l at the plants average flow rate resulting in an 80% reduction in the plants discharge of total nitrogen and phosphorous into the Bay.
The construction includes the placement of over 30,000 cy of reinforced concrete supported on 200,000 lineal feet of pipe pile ranging in sizes from 12” to 24” in diameter. Mechanical piping, process equipment, controls and electrical work will fill the completed structures along with foundation work for the upcoming Enhanced Nitrogen Removal facility (ENR) under Contract 845, scheduled for letting the second quarter of 2010.
