Fru-Con Construction Awarded $10.2 Million Project To Expand
Winters Branch Wastewater Treatment Plant in Manassas, VA
Expanded Facility Will More Than Double Treatment Capacity
FREDERICK, MD. --- Fru-Con Construction has been awarded a $10.2 million contract to expand the Winters Branch Pump Station in Manassas, Virginia. The project award was made by the Upper Occoquan Sewage Authority (UOSA).
Fru-Con will construct new facilities to more than double the capacity of the Winters Branch facility from 7.2 million gallons a day (MGD) to 17.5 MGD. In addition to refurbishing the existing pump station, Fru-Con will build a new submersible pump station; a new gravity sewer; a new emergency generator and surge tank building; a new flow meter and valve vault; and new odor control facilities. It also will run 10,000 feet of new 24-inch force main.
“The force main traverses arterial roads, railways, creeks and utility infrastructure,” Madkour said. “To execute this element of the project with precision and efficiency will require significant coordination with third parties.”
The project is part of the UOSA’s response to rapid population growth in the 11-billion-gallon Occoquan Reservoir watershed in northern Virginia.
Winters Branch is a sister facility to the Flat Branch Pump Station, where Fru-Con constructed a $40.3 million project initiated in 2009. Many of the professionals who managed construction at Flat Branch will maintain their roles for the Winters Branch expansion. Fru-Con Senior Project Manager Osama Madkour said, “Our ability to deploy a seasoned project team, experienced in working with UOSA, enabled us to be very competitive and present excellent value to the owner.”
