Broad Run Water Reclamation Facility
Situated near the Potomac River, the Broad Run Water Reclamation Facility, is an engineering and construction marvel. On land once used to grow acres of lush bluegrass, a sophisticated series of pipes, tanks, treatment and control systems protects one of the area’s most vital assets – Chesapeake Bay.
As the plant general contractor, Fru-Con worked under a multi-million dollar contract with the Loudoun County Sanitation Authority to build all preliminary and primary treatment facilities, as well as the administration and operations buildings. Construction included related site work, underground utilities and electrical and mechanical work.
The challenges at Broad Run were many – multiple contracts, complex structures, specialized equipment, and intricate instrumentation, control and chemical feed systems. Collaboration, open communication and camaraderie shaved more than a million dollars off the project cost through solid alternative construction recommendations.
Broad Run boasts a process stream cleaner than the tributary into which it discharges. It is one of the first wastewater treatment plants in the world to feature synthetic membrane bioreactor, activated carbon filtration and ultraviolet light technology. Additionally, it blends into the surrounding community – resembling a local park complete with ponds, trees and waterfalls.
